You ask me why I am so heartless.  Why I have acted as I have.  You call me mad and a fanatic but you don’t understand. You don’t understand why I am no more insane than any creature whose heart beats with the greatest force the world has ever witnessed. Do you know what that is, my dear?

Fear. It is what drives us all. No one is without it despite what they may tell you. It is a subtle yet powerful force that takes root somewhere and is impossible to silence; this is the origin of our actions, spurring us forward. For example, in my line of work, I have seen the fear of death inspire people to accomplish impossible feats, even if it meant turning against their nature.  You see, the face of death reveals our true selves; it unearths the person we are willing to become in order to survive.  But I have known an even greater fear, for there are many things in this world greater than the life of a single man.

I do not even speak of the death of all he loves such as his family or home but of something far more insidious.  I speak of the death of all he believes in; the very foundation of his being.  If you threaten that which he bases all of his life and legacy upon and truly strike at its heart, you will see what the real man is prepared to do.  He will not fear his own demise but instead the death of his way of life.  What is rational or logical becomes irrelevant to a man who will protect the soul of his homeland.   Because despite what others will tell you, souls can die.  And that my dear, that terrifies me.

That is why you are here.  I hope you now understand why I have done all that I have and forgive me for what I must do now.
"Does that make me the villain? Or the hero whose actions are justified? Who are you to decide? Or perhaps you are the only one who can..."

What is it that motivates us? I believe there are many answers but here I've presented one of my future characters and his own beliefs. I hope this creates a good enough window into the mind of this man who straddles the line between light and dark and questions if anyone can decide where he falls.

Reminiscent of "Sentinel of the Night," in the structure and impact. I like this one. These questions are some of my favorites. Does the end justify the means? Is there a soul? How far will a person go for something? They're all entwined in a harmonious little sneak-peek of what a possible villain for one of your series (Crescent Sun?). Just a couple things I think may make this flow a bit better:

- and is nearly impossible to silence.- I would remove "nearly." It's an unnecessary adverb, and just saying "impossible to silence" has more of an impact. Unless of course, there is a point that fear is removed in the series this is tied to. In that case, ignore this.

- You see, the fear of death reveals our true selves- I just think there can be a better term for "fear of death." Imminent death? The face of death? It's just, you don't need to specifically point out the fear itself, because death is already something people fear almost universally. It's also established beforehand that death is an honest fear.

Just my two cents. Very well done, and I look forward to seeing this character later.
