Synopsis: You don’t need super powers to change the world. Serving as a brief introduction into my alternate timeline for “The Next Phase”, this werewolf’s monologue explains the general essence of the resistance and both its human and supernatural members.

No-Man's Land

No-man’s land? I thought it was all “no-man’s land”, the sprawling wilderness between our nation’s cities. No one man could stake a claim to all beneath the American sky; it was for everyone to cherish, respect, and care for. I thought it was a free country, but that was before Cascadia carved into it and drove walls between us. I know they seek to reclaim every inch not contained by their walls, but not even they have infinite power. So they take what they can and fight for what they want, but the lands between their cities continue to belong to no man because they belong to the wolves.

There was a time when we lived everywhere, just another part of your world, yet a part never seen.  When we were revealed, some were afraid of us. Fear turned neighbors against each other and Cascadia only grew stronger from the chaos. Chaos they orchestrated. Freedoms were exchanged for security and many never thought twice. They fled the country to huddle under Cascadia’s gaze, abandoning anything and anyone they could bear to leave, running in fear from what they didn’t understand.

But in chasing out those they deemed monsters, they became blind to the one they strengthened, the one who protected them. Countless wolves suffered at Cascadia’s hands but to the public, we weren’t “human” so it didn’t matter. Everywhere free from the company’s grasp became our home. No-man’s land became a place for every wolf, even those unable to shift.

You see, not everyone who opposes Cascadia is a werewolf, but we’ve long since blurred the distinction. While they may not possess physical claws or fangs, the same fire burns within us all. A fire of sacrifice, loss, and hope. For within the soul of each man, woman, and child who sheds their blood and tears with me lies a wolf howling for freedom.  Freedom once rang out across this land and we will not rest until we hear it again. They stand with us as true werewolves at heart.

Ordinary people compelled by extraordinary circumstances can accomplish more than I ever thought possible. It doesn’t take great power to be a hero, only the willingness to do what’s right. It’s in this bravery that the true spirit of the wolf resides. If you’re like us, tired of tyranny and ready to fight back when the merciless prey upon the weak, then you’re already part of the pack. One of us.

So whether it’s with your paws to the ground and claws at Cascadia’s doorstep or behind the wheel of a Runner, don’t give up on your friends, your family, your pack, your home. This nation can be everyone’s again but it won’t come easily. The enemy is strong but we are stronger together. Remember that, because if we won’t accept help from others or offer it ourselves, we will always be outnumbered.

Another monologue I felt like writing down. Parts of it were/are going to be in the intro to another short story set in the dark, possible “Next Phase” future. I’ll get to that story after I write the ones I said I’d write in my journal but I had to get this down before it escaped me. Also, I’m going to start putting little synopses at the top of my work from now on since DA lets the first few paragraphs scroll by in their preview thumbnails. I’m hoping it will help more readers decide on whether or not to check the piece out.

Reminds me of "Eradication", but with a different entity. And, may I remind you, that you were the one that helped me out with that. I want to consider you as my rival, or just a competitor, you fell like a teacher.
